Cryptography is the foundation for secure communication in our connected world. Often seen as the art of secret writing, it goes beyond just making codes. Cryptography represents humanity’s enduring quest to find ways to communicate privately and securely, even when adversaries may be trying to intercept and listen in on messages. Cryptography’s origins are ancient, dating back to when messengers wrote secret messages on parchment for fast runners to deliver. Yet its principles remain timeless, evolving with each new technology, from the telegraph to the internet.

At cryptography’s core is a straightforward but profound goal: ensuring a message reaches only its intended recipient and no one else remains true whether messages travel wirelessly worldwide or sit in digital vaults. In essence, cryptography is not about the complexity of its formulas. It’s about building trust and privacy in our communications.

Cryptography relies on two key components: ciphers and keys. Ciphers are algorithms – sets of mathematical rules – that turn ordinary, readable text, called plaintext, into scrambled, unreadable gibberish. We’ve only scratched the surface of cryptography’s depth and reach. As we explore further its principles, techniques, and uses, remember that trust is at its core. This trust in a mathematical framework lets us freely share secrets, conduct business, and communicate in an increasingly online world. Cryptography’s bedrock of trust, built on centuries of innovation and human creativity, remains essential for enabling private, secure communication. With cryptography, we can protect information and uphold the basic human right to privacy.
